This workshop recognises that schools and their communities are embedded in powerful, life-shaping cultural contexts characterised by their own narratives, symbols, memories, hopes and dreams. Seeking to be shaped by the authority of the Scriptures necessitates that we understand the dual influences of Scripture and culture on the practice of education. How does culture shape us? What is the relationship between Scripture and culture? How can we be incisively formed by God’s word in our cultural times and places?

Learning Intentions

Participants will be able to: 

  1. To compare and contrast the biblical account of life with persuasive alternative cultural accounts in our times and places.
  2. To explore some significant portions of the Bible that will help participants compare and contrast biblical and cultural stories.
  3. To encourage educators and the communities of which they are part into an incisive engagement with our cultural times and places.
  4. To provide an approach to both biblical immersion and cultural engagement that can be used within the school community including with students.
  5. To promote changes in the culture and practices of the school in ways that will enhance biblical immersion, cultural engagement, the embrace of tension, and counter-formation for all who make up the educational community.
